How to recover data on External Hard drive for PC?

Recover Data

My external hard drive started clicking. From everything I have read, this is called ‘the slick of death’. How can I recover data from the hard drive if my computer will not see drive? Basically, how do I get the drive to mount? Is there software I can use?

I have tried to mount the external hard drive to a G4 via firewire and USB as well as to my PC and a laptop.

The “click of death” is usually the drives read heads coming loose and banging up the surface of the drive’s platters, so potentially the more you try to use the drive the less data you will be able to recover. What you need to do is take it to a data recovery service where they can take the drive apart and get any good data off the platters using some special equipment.
