CPU is running slow lately and i’m in the mood to use my recovery disk to remove years of grime. the only problem is i have no idea what files to back up. i know the basics: my documents, picutres, and my music. although, i’m not sure how to do it. buy a cheap 50gb external hard-drive? help!

i recently purchased the above and moved all my media to this drive to free up my internal hard drive. three days later the external drive was bumped and fell over 90 degrees and now none of my computers will read the external hard drive. i have contacted the manufacturer and they said all they could do was refer me to a data recovery company for 900 dollars. i have years of pictures and music that i need to recover, any suggestions for this computer neophyte?
